Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my pension never go up?

The British Government freezes the pensions of all pensioners living in certain countries. If you lived in the United States, your pension would be indexed every year. We are fighting to have this injustice reversed. BECOME A MEMBER AND JOIN IN THE FIGHT!

What happens to my pension when I go to visit family in England?

You are entitled to receive your full indexed pension (that is, the pension you would receive if you lived in the UK - or the United States). You must inform the Pension service and let them know of your travel plans. Hold on to your travel documents because you may have to send them in to prove that you were in the UK.

You can also claim this increase in pension when you are on vacation in any other "frozen" country - except, oddly enough, Bermuda and the United States.

Am I covered for Health care when I am in the United Kingdom?

No - as a non resident you are only covered for emergency treatment and you will be charged for any other medical expenses. You need to make sure that you have appropriate health and holiday insurance when you are visiting Britain.

I can't get to your regular meetings, so I am not sure if I should join you.

Only a small percentage of our members are able to attend regular meetings. Others keep in touch with what is happening with frozen pensions with our quarterly newsletter "The British Pensioner in Canada", and, if they have an e-mail address, with e-mail updates too.

It is essential, if you are a British pensioner, that you join a British pensioner organisation. We submit a list of our new members to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to be added to the case Jackson et al claiming discrimination against the British Government.
